Skazaniye o Vityazyah 4:11 ------ 40:27 Zhivye Ruiny is a Russian melodic death metal/Viking metal band that was formed in 2013. The bandÆs debut album, "Duh Voiny" was released in June of 2014 through the notorious Russian label Fono Ltd. While the spectacular cover art calls to mind the works of many a Viking metal stalwart, Zhivye RuinyÆs sound really doesnÆt capture the pagan nature that is depicted. Rather than marching over windswept valleys and charging headfirst into battle, Zhivye Ruiny focuses on galloping in with a steady middle of the road pace. The bandÆs sound is just as stripped down as their bare bones three piece line up. Really, the music on "Duh Voiny" flies past without much ado. The bandÆs sound is centered on mid-paced chugging with rather unremarkable performances all around. ThatÆs not really to say that musicianship is shoddily performed, because everything is rather sharp and well played, but thereÆs not much substance to latch on to. It takes until around the halfway mark for anything to truly stand out amid the plodding chugs and growls and, even then, itÆs when the band dabbles with looming, folk-inspired guitar melodies that bring things into a more favorable light. The vocals, which sound like a gruff shout or growl, are somewhat one dimensional as well, so it furthers the whole ônot a lot of variationö thing. ItÆs rather difficult delving into an album that is exceedingly back heavy, as the true standout tracks, such as "Pokuda Zhiv Rod" and "Skazanie o Vityazyah" are the last two offerings on the ten track album. With those two tracks, the band picks up the paces a bit, with some double bass rhythms and a focus on hooky riffing rather than just run of the mill plodding. The melodies work wonders, but it all comes a little late to the party. Why it took the band so long to delve into solid frost-bitten trem riffing, swirling with underlying melodies like on "Skazanie o Vityazyah", one will never know. Sure there are traces of this throughout, but itÆs never prominent and it never takes precedence of the slow burning chugs. ItÆs unfortunate because towards the end of the album Zhivye Ruiny shows that they can play a dynamic and interesting form of viking-esque melodic death metal. With the last few tracks on "Duh Voiny", Zhivye Ruiny certainly seem to have a solid grasp on songwriting, so hopefully future endeavors will incorporate their more dynamic sound, rather than plodding along to no end.
